Since the 17th century, our story has been shaped by the legacy of two noble families Bou Alwan, known for their fearless defense of the oppressed, and Talhouk, celebrated for their wisdom, jurisprudence, and poetic intellect.

Mohammad BEK Abou Alwan of Barouk
Hala’s 17th-century forefather A distinguished leader, appointed governor of the region from 1662 to 1667.
Nabhan BEK Abou Alwan
One of Hala’s early ancestors, four generations ago, was a prominent leader in Mount Lebanon. He was known for his extensive charitable endowments and a deep commitment to social reform. His landholdings stretched from the Bekaa Valley to Barouk, leaving behind a lasting legacy of generosity, leadership, and community upliftment.
Othman Bek, son of Nabhan
A reformist leader three generations before Hala, served as a member of Lebanon’s Council of Statesmen. He courageously led a revolt against Ottoman rule and generously donated a significant portion of his estate particularly to Khilwat Al-Babda. He was widely respected for his deep humanity and unwavering dedication to orphans and the underprivileged.
Saeed Bek, son of Mustafa
A pivotal figure in Hala’s 19th-century lineage, he was born in 1849 and passed away in 1920. As leader of the Chouf and a long-serving member of the Mount Lebanon Administrative Council (1875–1905), he later rose to the position of district governor. He was renowned for his unwavering defense of the oppressed and his protection of Christian clergy. During the Great Famine, his home along with Deir Al-Mokhalles Monastery served as a sanctuary for those in desperate need.
His mother, Shams Al-Imad, known as Shams Al-Barouk, is remembered for her courageous protection of Christian communities in Barouk and neighboring villages during the 1860 unrest.
Farhan Bek, son of Saeed
Hala’s great-grandfather Born in 1879, died in 1930. A reformist leader of the Chouf and strong advocate for the marginalized. He served as a council member and district governor and stood for justice until the end of his life.
Aref Bek, son of Farhan,
Hala’s grandfather Born in 1896, died in 1958. A national political figure, advisor to King Faisal, and co-founder of the Socialist Party. He redistributed land to farmers, earned many honors, and was remembered by Kamal Jumblatt and the Egyptian ambassador on behalf of President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
His eulogy included:
“They said the country darkened…
We wondered what happened…
We said the walls fell… It lost its greatest eagle…
It lost its greatest leader.”
Fa’iza Jamil Bek Talhouq,
Hala’s grandmother Came from a noble ruling family in Mount Lebanon. Her father, Jamil Bek, was a renowned lawyer and poet admired for his leadership and integrity. Her grandfather, Saeed Bek, was the legal representative of the religious community, President of the Supreme Criminal Court.
Layla Bou Alwan, Hala’s mother
Born at the end of 1958. A talented artist specialized in interior decoration, glass painting, and garden design. She is a passionate social activist and serves as president of a development-focused non-profit organization that supports skill development and empowers youth. Layla played a critical role in providing care, shelter, and essentials to displaced families during times of crisis. She remains a key contributor in several associations dedicated to environmental protection, individual skills development, and rural community advancement. She is known for her wisdom and is regarded as a reference figure in many areas especially in empowering women through local crafts, food production, and creating job opportunities across villages.
Raja Aref Bou Alwan, Hala's Father
A name spoken with reverence across legal, intellectual, and human rights circles in Lebanon and the Arab world, Raja Bou Alwan is far more than a lawyer he is a distinguished figure whose intellect, compassion, and principled stance have shaped a legacy that blends legal excellence, poetic expression, and fearless humanity.
A senior appellate and cassation lawyer with over 50 years of distinguished practice, Raja specializes in financial, commercial, and corporate law. He has served as legal counsel to some of the region’s most prominent institutions in the financial, real estate, and civil sectors, and is a trusted advisor to multinational corporations, esteemed Arab personalities, and high ranking officials.
What truly defines Raja, however, is his unwavering commitment to justice and human dignity. Throughout his career, he has taken on hundreds of legal cases pro bono cases rooted in fairness, moral responsibility, and a profound sense of humanity. He defends the voiceless, champions the marginalized, and advocates for causes that extend far beyond Lebanon’s borders.
During the Lebanese Civil War and other times of national crisis, he repeatedly risked his own safety to ensure others had access to justice, shelter, and protection. His guiding principle is both humble and powerful: “If I can help, I must.”
Beyond the courtroom, Raja is a prolific writer and public intellectual. He has authored numerous articles on legal, political, and social matters, and was awarded the honorary title “Poet of Arab Universities.” His poetry collection, Between Love and Freedom, reflects his deep literary voice, with two additional books currently in development. As a translator, educator, and cultural leader, Raja began his journey in teaching and translation as a student and continues to foster knowledge and dialogue to this day.
He is also the founder and president of the Lebanese Indian Friendship Association a platform where diplomacy meets discourse, and law intersects with literature.
